We know you see all these up and coming artists popping up on your feeds and it’s probably got you thinking; how the hell did they make it? Coming up on your own isn’t easy and takes practice, and we have a few tips for y’all so let’s chop it up how to make that cash without selling your soul—or worse, getting a 9 to 5.
1
Stock Up on Stock SitesYeah, it’s like giving up a piece of your creative spirit every time you upload to those stock photo or design sites. Sure, you might make a few bucks, but that cash can get you a few things for cheap at Mickey D’s (hopefully they bring that dollar menu back). Ain’t nobody getting rich off it, but it’ll keep your stomach full here and there.
2
Work for “Exposure”We all know the “I can’t pay you, but this’ll be great exposure” game. Translation: “I’m gonna use your work to make money, and you get… well, nothing.” Try to avoid this if you’re confident in your work and know your worth, but at the same time if you need a little boost from someone who has bigger numbers, it doesn’t hurt to jump on that. It’d be crazy if Kendrick Lamar reached out to post your art on his story for free and you turned him down!
3
Freelance HustleAh, the freelance game. It’s like living in the Wild West—anything goes. You set your price, but sometimes you get paid in crumbs, other times in gold. Flex that creative muscle, but make sure you’ve got a backup plan when clients go ghost.
4
Get a “Real” Job…For NowWorking 9 to 5 in a design firm or as an in-house photographer sounds like you’re selling out, but hold up—it comes with a steady check, health insurance, and maybe even paid time off. It’s not as free as freelance, but hey, it keeps your belly full, a roof over your head and hot water in the meantime. Plus, you don’t have to do this forever, maybe just save up for a few months so when you go solo to do your own thing, you have that security bag in the bank in case you trip up.
5
Create and Sell, Sell, Sell! Now we’re talking! Start your own brand, make your own art, and sell it like the star you are. Whether it’s prints, clothing, or digital goods, this is where you own the game. You set the prices, and all that sweet revenue is yours. Just remember, stay true to yourself and be original. No one likes the same overused bs over and over, be different and spread your name like wildfire!
Being a creative today can be a challenge, but if you keep a cool head, chill and stick to a plan, money will be flowin’ in your wallet. Consistency is key, just because you’re broke today doesn’t mean you won’t be ballin’ tomorrow! Turning Your Vision into Cash
