Hey boo’s and babes! Are you a new college student fresh out of high school? Are you still walking to the campus shuttle and eating in the dining hall alone? Let’s get real; that’s kinda sad and you can do better than that. College is your time to really shine, socialize, and gang up! These are the years to find your people, but if it’s been a pain in the ass so far, don’t worry, we gotchu hun. Here’s some tips to help you find your homies!
From the Beginning
Hands down, easiest way to make friends? O-R-I-E-N-T-A-T-I-O-N. All colleges emphasize the social aspect of getting to know your peers even before attending your first classes. This is why Colleges that give overnight orientations pair up students to sleep in the dorms, almost like a 24 Hour student trial. The time spent sleeping in a room with a stranger your age could be time spent getting to know them better so don’t be shy!
Consistency is key
In all honesty, your first chance at making a friend during classes is the person you sit next to. Most freshmen are too nervous to casually change their seats throughout the semester and usually stay in the one they picked in the beginning unless told by the professor. Get ready to really know your desk neighbors though because once class projects come around, there ain’t no playin around. It’s good to build school relationships when you’re actively working together and who knows, maybe you’ll have the same taste in music. Maybe they’re also thinking that Big Mouth shouldn’t have had another season approved. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll go get some panera in the dining hall with them and shoot the shit!
Work It Real Good
Okay, this one might seem like an odd point on the list, but hear us out. Once you get that work study approved and start your job on campus, you’ll be seeing the same faces almost every other day. Peep this; let’s say you work at the campus coffee shop. Maaaaaaaad students get coffee, they need it, for real for real, which means, they’ll be consistent customers. Once you get those names for the orders, have some small talk with them, catch up little by little every other day and drop their names here and there. Once it seems casual enough, ask them to hang out! Just have that confidence in hand and things’ll go smoothly.
Give Back and Get Back
Volunteering is another way you can find your people. All colleges offer volunteer opportunities for one subject or another, sometimes even being a part of a class’s curriculum. This is an easy way to get to know others while giving back to the community, and in return, you get a friend! So look at those flyers in the hallways or in your school email to see what’s being offered!
T.G.I.F
Okay okay, we all know what every one of y’all is thinking; ‘what about the parties?’ ‘I just wanna party and meet people’ ‘This school’s nightlife better be LIT’. Chill, calm your asses down because this one comes with a bit of caution. Yes, parties and outings are a great way to meet people, especially if you join a fraternity or a sorority BUT you do need to be careful. College life means you’re mostly on your own now. You’re an adult so you don’t need people to be supervising you but that also means that these parties are also usually unsupervised. Students of all ages can party which is fine, but remember that the legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21. Also be mindful of who you surround yourselves with. You may find a banging group of friends which is fine, but don’t get too close to them just yet, let that friendship cook. And ladies, be especially careful with parties and getting home safely. Alright! Now it’s time for you to take the wheel and find your own gang of people that you can trust and have fun with, so pull out that phone, open up your contacts, and get those numbers down!
